At a shrine
1. Bow once before passing through the torii gate; walk to the side, not down the center (the center is the deity’s path).
2. At the purification fountain (temizuya), rinse your left hand, then right, then your mouth.
3. At the hall of worship: two bows, two claps, one bow (Izumo Taisha uses two bows, four claps, one bow).

At a temple
1. Bow with palms together at the main gate.
2. Purify your hands as at a shrine.
3. At the main hall, place your palms together and bow — but do not clap.

Please don’t

• Speak loudly, or eat and drink while walking through sacred grounds.
• Enter roped-off or restricted areas.
• Take home natural objects (stones, plants, sand).
